Recent reports indicate that President Biden feels a strong sense of resentment toward key Democratic figures who influenced his decision to step aside from the 2024 presidential race, even as preparations unfold for a grand farewell at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
Biden is particularly upset by the fact that former President Obama opted not to communicate his advice for Biden to withdraw in person, instead choosing to exert pressure away from direct confrontation, as detailed by Politico on Tuesday. Further compounding his frustration is former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom Biden believes played a crucial role in persuading him to exit the race, alongside Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
A source within the White House has conveyed that Biden perceives Pelosi as “ruthless,” especially following events from July that led to his withdrawal.
DNC Plans: A Contradictory Farewell
Amid this backdrop of tension and discontent, plans are moving ahead for what Democrats aim to be a significant sendoff for Biden at the DNC. Ironically, many party members who initially pressured him into resigning are now publicly celebrating him as an influential elder statesman.
In July, shortly after announcing his departure from the race, Pelosi lauded Biden’s contributions: “President Joe Biden embodies patriotism and has consistently prioritized our nation’s interests. His leadership leaves an indelible mark on American history.”
Later she expressed heartfelt gratitude towards him: “We owe much thanks and appreciation to President Biden for continuously believing in America’s potential and providing opportunities for so many.”
The Future Transition at DNC
The upcoming convention schedule outlines how Democrats plan on transitioning authority from Biden to Vice President Kamala Harris. Scheduled remarks will begin with Hillary Clinton addressing attendees before proceeding with two other former presidents—Obama will headline on Tuesday followed by Bill Clinton on Wednesday—and culminating with Harris’s address wrapping up this transformative week.
Pelosi was inquired about her belief in mending her relationship with Biden post-coup during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki.” When asked about reconciling friendships after political tensions arose, Pelosi emphasized her family’s longstanding admiration for Joe as well as their collective desire to uphold his legacy.
“Our family holds multiple generations of affection for Joe,” she shared fondly. “My husband and I have known him extensively—we respect both Joe and Jill very much.” She further noted cherished memories amassed over years involving their children growing up alongside them.
Pelosi concluded her remarks stating that it is imperative they unite efforts towards winning upcoming elections—integral not just for preserving but also enhancing what they claim is a vital legacy left behind by President Biden during both his tenure and through Harris’s future presidency along with Tim Walz’s involvement.
