A report by NBC 5 uncovered documents indicating that, during this financial turmoil, over $80,000 was allocated for the renovation and decoration of an office at the Chicago Cultural Center designated for First Lady Stacie Johnson.
The investigation revealed that work orders initiated in February persisted through August of this year to refurbish Room 306 within the Cultural Center. The invoices obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests detailed labor performed by electricians, carpenters, and painters employed by the city, amounting to more than 350 hours at a cost exceeding $25,000.
Details on Furnishing Expenses
An additional invoice disclosed that more than $43,000 was spent on furniture alone. This included a $2,200 office chair and a desk labeled ”First Lady’s Desk,” which cost approximately $4,400. Furthermore, another desk for staff was purchased for around $4,600 while two club chairs totaled over $8,300.
This particular invoice was dated August 13 with payment due by September 12 according to NBC 5’s findings.
Lack of Response from Mayor’s Office
Mayor Johnson’s office has not provided any comments in response to inquiries from Fox News Digital regarding these expenditures.
The Mayor Defends His Administration’s Actions
When confronted about these invoices and asked to justify such spending amidst potential layoffs aimed at reducing costs within his administration,Johnson stated:
“The Cultural Center has historically served as an office space for dignitaries; every first lady has had an office there. Renovating my office or any other is standard practice.”
The mayor emphasized his commitment to investing in people despite criticisms regarding spending habits during financially challenging times.
