May Udy, 32, is nearing the point where she can afford part-time childcare. Employed full-time in a remote sales position, her husband Jackson works consistently as a contract engineer based in Knoxville, Tennessee.
However, the expense of even minimal childcare for their two children—Noah and Hannah, aged 5 and 6—is simply overwhelming.
On a national scale, annual childcare costs for one child can vary between $4,800 to $15,000. These figures are projected to continue escalating. In Tennessee specifically, families face average yearly expenses ranging from $10,000 to $11,000.
There is bipartisan acknowledgment among politicians regarding the financial burden that childcare imposes on families. Recently, JD Vance proposed that parents should seek assistance from family members: “Perhaps grandparents would like to contribute more,” he suggested. ”This could alleviate some of the strain on our daycare resources.”
This option isn’t available for Udy.
She represents many millennial parents who receive no support from their own parents due to geographical distance or differing philosophies on child-rearing.
Pew Research indicates that baby boomers are remaining in the workforce longer than previous generations did; consequently they may not be available to care for grandchildren as often. Additionally, some grandparents prefer maintaining boundaries around babysitting duties so they can enjoy their own lives.
Udy’s in-laws reside five hours away by flight in Washington state and only engage with their grandchildren during visits focused on leisure activities—they have never offered help with babysitting or changing diapers. Meanwhile her own parents are currently engaged in a church mission off Fiji’s coast for two years. This leaves Udy and her husband feeling perpetually stretched thin.
“We’re constantly exhausted,” Udy expressed. “It’s hard not to feel envious when friends have family nearby who can step in at any moment.”
The Isolation of Modern Parenting
The experience of raising children far from family can be both costly and isolating.
Katie and Anthony Waldron live on Long Island—approximately seven hours away from Katie’s family in Buffalo—and about ten hours from Anthony’s relatives across the Atlantic Ocean in Birmingham UK.
The couple chose Long Island as it offers proximity to New York City job opportunities while raising their four-year-old son (name withheld for privacy). Katie works in public relations while Anthony is involved with television production; however building local friendships capable of providing occasional childcare has proven more challenging than anticipated.
“Being newcomers here made us unaware of how difficult this would be,” said Waldron at age 38.

Waldron’s siblings live too far upstate despite being willing helpers if needed urgently.
“This realization was distressing enough that we began questioning whether this location suits us long-term,” she admitted.
The Waldron couple contemplates relocating back to England where they first met during college days—to gain closer access familial support along with affordable childcare options.
They aspire towards having another child soon before age gaps become unmanageable but see little chance without significant changes occurring here within America.
“The combination between high costs associated alongside lack emotional backing throughout parenting makes it nearly impossible right now,” she concluded.

Apart from geographical challenges faced by many families seeking help there exists another hurdle: differing opinions regarding effective caregiving practices.
