Charges Filed Against Sudanese Nationals for Massive DDoS Campaign

U.S. federal authorities have⁣ taken legal action against two‍ individuals from Sudan, accusing them of orchestrating a vast⁤ operation that executed tens of thousands of⁤ distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks​ targeting some of the largest technology firms globally, as well as essential ​infrastructure and government entities.

Targets of the DDoS⁤ Attacks

The operation,​ known as Anonymous ‍Sudan, unleashed powerful and prolonged ​DDoS assaults ⁣on major⁤ tech companies such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Riot Games, PayPal, Steam, Hulu, Netflix, Reddit,​ GitHub, and⁢ Cloudflare. Additionally, high-profile targets included CNN.com and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.‌ The ‌U.S. Departments ⁢of Justice, Defense and State were also among those affected by these cyberattacks. Furthermore, various sites across Europe experienced similar disruptions.

Details ⁣on the⁣ Accused

The accused brothers are Ahmed Salah ‌Yousif Omer (22 years old) and Alaa Salah Yusuuf Omer (27 ⁢years old).​ They face charges including conspiracy to damage protected computers. Specifically for Ahmed Salah⁢ Yousif Omer‌ there are three additional counts related to damaging protected systems. Notably among the⁢ allegations is an ⁢attempt​ by one brother to “knowingly and recklessly cause death.” If found guilty ⁤on all counts presented against ‌him, Ahmed could potentially face life imprisonment in federal custody; Alaa ⁣could be‌ sentenced to a maximum of five years.
