Charges Filed Against Sudanese Nationals for Massive DDoS Campaign
U.S. federal authorities have taken legal action against two individuals from Sudan, accusing them of orchestrating a vast operation that executed tens of thousands of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting some of the largest technology firms globally, as well as essential infrastructure and government entities.
Targets of the DDoS Attacks
The operation, known as Anonymous Sudan, unleashed powerful and prolonged DDoS assaults on major tech companies such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Riot Games, PayPal, Steam, Hulu, Netflix, Reddit, GitHub, and Cloudflare. Additionally, high-profile targets included CNN.com and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The U.S. Departments of Justice, Defense and State were also among those affected by these cyberattacks. Furthermore, various sites across Europe experienced similar disruptions.
Details on the Accused
The accused brothers are Ahmed Salah Yousif Omer (22 years old) and Alaa Salah Yusuuf Omer (27 years old). They face charges including conspiracy to damage protected computers. Specifically for Ahmed Salah Yousif Omer there are three additional counts related to damaging protected systems. Notably among the allegations is an attempt by one brother to “knowingly and recklessly cause death.” If found guilty on all counts presented against him, Ahmed could potentially face life imprisonment in federal custody; Alaa could be sentenced to a maximum of five years.
