Industry experts predict that the Nintendo Switch may soon surpass the PlayStation 2 in total sales within the United States.
Mat Piscatella, a renowned analyst from Circana specializing in video game market trends, stated in a recent update on X (formerly Twitter): “As of now, the PS5 leads PS4’s lifetime sales by 7%, while the Switch is trailing behind the PlayStation 2 by merely 1.1 million units.”
Piscatella also noted that Xbox Series consoles are maintaining a robust pace similar to that of the Xbox 360 and anticipate receiving an additional boost through CF25 analytics. He mentioned returning to this subject for further analysis shortly.
The trajectory indicating that Nintendo Switch may exceed PS2’s lifetime numbers aligns with Nintendo’s recently released financial summary for Q1 of 2024. By June 30, worldwide sales figures for all models of the Nintendo Switch had reached approximately 143.42 million units—just shy of PS2’s total global sales estimated between 155 and 160 million units.
Despite showing signs of declining hardware sales as indicated by Q1 financial statements, it is evident that since its launch in March 2017, the console has displayed remarkable longevity.
Interestingly enough, even with speculation surrounding an upcoming successor referred to as Nintendo Switch 2 slated for release next year, reports suggest that Nintendo intends to continue supporting its current system significantly longer.
A prime example is Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, which was announced during a June Direct event and is set for release in early 2025 on Switch. This has led observers to believe it could share similarities with how The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched simultaneously on both Wii U and Switch back during its debut year in 2017.
